9 weeks: Our little Cashew

Your Baby This Coming Week

The crown-to-rump length of your baby is about 1.25 to 1.68 inches (between 3.1 and 4.2cm). He weighs about 0.18 ounces (5g).

The placenta is now producing progesterone which helps to make nutrients for your developing baby.

Your baby has passed the stage when he is most susceptible to damage. By the end of this week, the danger zone for congenital abnormalities has passed.

The plan for your baby's body has been completely laid down by now. Further growth and cell division will build on this plan.

Taste and tooth buds have appeared.

Your baby has recently developed fingers and toes which are now well-formed. Ankles, wrists and the inner ear have formed. Your baby's nose is flat and his eyes are far apart. His eyes, ears, mouth and nose are all recognizable. The tail is disappearing.

Your baby is moving around the amniotic sac, and moving his feet and ankles. You still will not be able to feel these movements but you may be able to see them on an ultrasound.

Blood is circulating through the arteries and the vein of the umbilical cord.

The brain of your baby is developing at a phenomenal rate. About one quarter of a million new neurons are produced every single minute at this stage in your pregnancy.

If your baby is a boy, his testes, though they are not even clearly visible, are already producing testosterone.

Your baby is no longer called an embryo, but rather a fetus.

P.S. For those who love the fruit/veggie references, this little Cashew is now the size of an olive!
P.P.S. I feel pretty strongly it's a boy, I have no idea why. Just a feeling. And yes, we WILL be finding out and sharing with everyone whether it's a boy or a girl!

Hi April,
Thanks for the Congrats - and congrats to you too.
Yes I'm on the Due in August board on FF.
I'll look for you over there :)

I see a FF reference above, and have to giggle... I'm still friends with some of my FF board people and we haven't been on there in more than two years.

I'm a bit biased in loving baby boys (wonder why?), but know you'll be thrilled either way. And even though we didn't find out ahead of time, I had a feeling Baby Bean (his nickname prior to Little Dude) was a boy, too.

I think it's amazing, all the little parts & processes that are already working in such a teeny tiny little person. The food references always make me giggle a little but I will admit that it makes it much easier to visualize the size. I don't have a feeling yet on what Cashew is. Sometimes it takes me a while to get one. I have an easier time if I am actually *around* the mommy-to-be in question.

Yay for your little olive! Now that my google reader is FINALLY working (two weeks without it!) I'm catching up on all the blogs. I'm sorry to hear that you're hungry yet repulsed by food. But yay for your olive! :)

I love these posts. Look how big Cashew is getting...I am leaning toward a boy myself...I thought Em was a boy, but I think it was because I wanted a girl so bad (deep down) that this way I wouldn't be disappointed it was a boy-would've loved whoever came out! I always thought I'd want another girl someday a sister for Em, but if we were ever lucky enough I think a baby boy would be nice.

A girl olive. GIRL OLIVE! I swear, if you have a girl, I'll try to find fabric with olives on it (just need to remember I said that).

I always loved reading the little facts about what was going on. We sound so similar. Some of the references to size cracked me up.

It cracks me up that babies start out with tails.

I love, love, love the baby olive reports. Although cashew was so my favorite.

I feel like I'm pregnant with you. I'm not, obviously, but I love reliving the experience minus the puking.

I'll just shut up now.
